The Exes

Born to high-profile parents in 1932, Elizabeth Taylor made a name for herself in Hollywood when she starred in the critically acclaimed movie “National Velvet” when she was just 14 years old. A few years later, she was pursued by many famous and wealthy men.

Elizabeth’s first marriage was to Conrad Hilton, Jr., who was heir to the Hilton Hotel fortune. After only nine months, the highly publicized marriage ended in divorce. Elizabeth went on to marry British actor Michael Wilding, but they also divorced after a 5-year marriage. Her third husband was film producer Mike Todd. After his tragic death, however, she married his best friend Eddie Fischer, to whom she was wed for almost 5 years.

The Love Story

Elizabeth Taylor met Richard Burton on the set of her famous film “Cleopatra.” While filming in Rome, the paparazzi photographed the couple on various romantic outings. This caused quite a scandal, considering both actors were married at the time. Their steamy love story progressed even after the movie had finished shooting, and it was clear that the couple was truly in love. Just nine days after her divorce to her 4th husband, Elizabeth Taylor said “I Do” to Richard Burton in an intimate wedding ceremony at the Ritz-Carlton Montreal.

The Engagement Ring

Elizabeth Taylor’s engagement ring is one for the ages! Richard Burton presented the glamorous actress with a 33.19 Ascher-cut Krupp diamond while they were aboard his yacht on the Thames in London! The breathtaking stone was set in platinum and flanked by smaller diamonds on each side. This ring would prove to be one of Elizabeth’s most prized possessions, and she wore it frequently until the time of her death.

Quite incredibly, the 33.19 carat diamond was not the largest diamond that Richard Burton bought for her. After a record-breaking bidding war, Burton eventually purchased a 69-carat pear shaped diamond for his beloved in 1969! He paid $1.1-million dollars for the stone, which translates to over $7-million in today’s currency when adjusting for inflation. Elizabeth could rarely wear it in public as armed guards had to be present when she wore it. For this reason, the diamond was nearly always kept in a vault unless worn specifically for public appearances.

The Decadent Marriage

Elizabeth Taylor and Richard Burton were an incredibly famous couple that lived life in the public eye. They would star in 11 films together, but they were best known for living a highly publicized lavish lifestyle that included trips around the world on yachts and private jets. Their tumultuous marriage ended in divorce in 1974. They fell back in love in 1975 and had a second wedding, but this marriage was brief and only lasted about a year.
