 What is GIA?

The GIA is the Gemological Institute of America and was established in 1931. They are the most respected and well known authority on diamonds, pearls, and gemstones. They initiated the 4 C's (cut, clarity, color, carat) and the Diamond Grading System which are used as the international standard for grading diamonds. When a diamond says "GIA certified" or "GIA graded," that means that the GIA has inspected the stone and you can expect those gradings to be very accurate.

What is EGL USA?

EGL USA is a Gemological Laboratory that also that grades diamonds, gemstones, and other jewelry. EGL USA is a very reputable company and when a diamond says "EGL certified" or "EGL graded" then you can trust the reported gradings to be correct.

Is There a Difference Between GIA and EGL?

It has been reported that there is a difference between GIA and EGL gradings and it is mainly in the color grade. EGL tends to grade 1 or 2 shades higher than the GIA. The EGL also grades stones that are mounted in jewelry and the GIA does not. You will see more antique jewelry to be EGL graded because it may be detrimental to the jewelry to remove the diamond so it is much safer to send the entire piece to the EGL to be graded. The GIA and EGL are both trustworthy so if it is certified by either lab then you can rest assured that the information is accurate.
